So a friend of mine randomly messaged me last week saying you can go from Burnley (near where I live) to London for ‘like ten quid’, £10.50 to be precise. Not one to be boring all the time I jumped at the opportunity to go down on a nice little photography adventure. I love street photography and I knew my tiny Panasonic gh1 with the kit lens and a manual Nikon f.18 50mm prime would be perfect for being discrete and snapping up some un suspecting victims.

It’s been a while since I have done a post, in the midst of Graduation and finally finding some hope of a good creative job I decided that Sound is what really makes a film. I have been working hard creating motion graphics and this gave me a really good opportunity to be more experimental and creative with sound so I thought it would be nice to share some tips I have come across.
For me sound design & recording comes quite naturally, my A levels where in music technology and I have been through the process of recording bands e.t.c (a skill I would advise any film-maker to gain). It’s often said sound is 51% of a film and I totally agree, an audience will tolerate bad video if the sound is good but never vice versa. I my self once had to make the transition between FCP7 to Premiere (when cs5 came out) and I can honestly say I have never looked back. The workflow for me is a lot more intuitive and apart from the clear benefits (FCP is only 32bit) it also integrates amazingly within its own software. For those of you who use Adobe AE to finish your project you will understand what I mean (using popcorn island to move you XML files back and forth was such a pain). To this day I still however use Soundtrack Pro, (for my sound design) as a Logic Pro user it just clicks with me seamlessly. So, enough on my background, I wanted to post this because when I made the transition is was at times very frustrating, if only I had something like this to help me at the time……….

1) Will Premiere Pro CS6 output an OMF file for audio mixing?
Yes: File > Export > OMF will bring up this export dialog box to choose your preferred settings.
2) How to bring one timeline from one project to another?
The simplest method is you have a project open that you want to move a select sequence from is to just select the sequence and COPY. Then open the next project and PASTE. That will paste that new sequence into the edit. Note that all the media that is in that new timeline will get new items created in the project as well. Continue reading
Its coming ever closer to the release dates of both the Black magic cinema camera and the Sony fs-700 so I am going to spend my time re-capping on all the info we’ve had on these cameras as they excite me the most in the Film Market this year, why? Well were getting two things here, a pro camera that can shoot slow motion 4k ready & a consumer priced camera that can shoot RAW 4.4.4 2.5k Images to 24p & 25p (NICE!).
I know the Sony is an awful lot more expense but it interests me some what as I can easily see this being the first of a long line of slow motion capable cameras at a lower price point (I am a big fan of slow motion so 200fps PAL really excites me). As we all know the bigger company’s set the pace for the smaller ones and thus the features eventually find themselves getting more and more accessible, (how long before we see 200fps in a HDSLR?-More likely not to be from the rather ignorant Canon makers). So you’re thinking about buying a nice new HDSLR camera, you think to yourself yes, now is a good time to buy. Prices are steadily falling on the canon 550d, the Panasonic gh2 is due to be replaced soon (making it cheap) and there’s a whole host of ‘affordable’ HDSLR’s on the market – a long with tonnes of comparison videos and reviews. This article is here to pluck the very best from comparisons between the Nikon d800, the canon 5dmrkiii, the canon 550d and the Panasonic gh2.
But don’t rush! The cameras are still going to be on sale in two weeks I know you’re probably very eager to get out and shoot. Wait, make sure you weigh up you’re options…. find comparisons and weigh up the pros and cons for what YOU need the camera for. Ask your self……

- What lenses will I need without having to compromise sharpness (price)
- WHAT WILL I BE FILMING?? SHORT FILMS?? MUSIC VIDEOS??
- Do I really need low light performance (do I shot out doors or with lighting set ups?)
- Do I need to shoot in tight spaces? (fast wide lenses, full frame sensors)
- Is resolution more important to me than anything else? (green screening)
- Do I need on board audio recording?
After you have considered all these factors write down you’re own ideal features YOU need and read on……..(Write down next to the above questions which camera best suits that feature and at the end see which camera you have written down the most……buy that camera). Continue reading
Slow motion (with the new Sony fs700) is likely to become the new shallow depth of field, we are probably going to be seeing it everywhere. I love slow motion and I used it in my own short film Solvo Curso just a couple of months ago so (after a lot of asking) I though I would go through the entire workflow of how I achieved this, from the canon 550d shooting modes to the post production and how to best use Twixtor. It’s easier than you think and obviously you’re not going to be able to compete with real 2000fps but you’re definitely going to get that vital few seconds of super slow motion footage to create a really cool sequence. SHOOT: don’t do what almost every film maker does when there starting out and start obsessing over gear. ‘Oh I need this to shoot this and I can’t do that shot with out this e.t.c.’ This cycle will never end so its good to snap out of it quickly. If you cant get the gear FIND A WAY AROUND IT. If its your first film then it’s probably not going to look brilliant, get over it everybody starts like that. Take the experience as a practice for that one big film your working towards, the one that’s going to really show of your creativity. Shoot regardless of anything, get the practice and once you have shot, don’t stop. Go out and shoot something random, practice with your camera, you need to get to know it like the back of your hand.
