12 Jun

So, here it is, in its full glory. This is not a post about how amazing this new product is, rather an overview of its specs and what alternate options are out there for you if you want to stick to WINDOWS…….

Apple Macbook pro With retina display:

Specs & Pricing:

The 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display is available through the Apple Online Store (www.apple.com), Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers. The 15-inch MacBook Pro is available with a 2.3 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor with Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.3 GHz, 8GB of memory and 256GB of flash storage starting at $2,199 (US); and with a 2.6 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor with Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.6 GHz, 8GB of memory and 512GB of flash storage starting at $2,799 (US). • USB 3 Ports X2
  • Thunderbolt Ports X2
  • Core i7 Processor
  • 8GB of 1600MHz DDR3L onboard memory (configurable to 16GB)
  • NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory and automatic graphics switching
  • OSX Lion
  • 7hours batter
  • Retina display: 15.4-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit display with IPS technology; 2880-by-1800 !!

That 2880 by 1800px  retina display is what everybody is raving about. Quite simply its going to be stunning, imagine how good your RAW files are going to look on this thing! On top of that you can edit Full HD video with room around the sides for your interface menu, in essence giving you the ability to edit your movie whilst still seeing the whole 1080 by 1920 footage! Very Nice. Here’s the vid:
ENOUGH, we all know mac’s are lovely machines and I don’t want to start an Apple VS PC war here but its simple fact that you can usually get more for you money when investing in PC. So, here’s a couple of alternatives Iv got together for you to weigh up you’re options. First off:

MSI GT70 Gaming Laptop 17.3

For me this really sums up what you can get for your money when you go to a custom build site. This is an absolute power house and if you don’t mind not having that retina display then get this. It’s around £2100, similar to the Macbook pro but for this you’re getting  much better everything.
Here’s its specs:
  • 17.3″ Full HD non glare screen, LED backlit
  • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium
  • 3rd Generation “Ivy Bridge” Intel Core i7 Gen3 Quad Core Processor
  • Intel HM77 Chipset
  • 16GB DDR3 1600MHz support up to 32GB
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX670M with 3GB of memory and GPU Boost powered by Nvidia Optimus
  • 2x 64GB SDD Configured in MSI Super Raid
  • 750GB SATA Hard Drive
  •  Blu-Ray Burner Optical Drive
  •  Killer 2205 Gaming Network Card
  • Stereo Speakers with Subwoofer from Dynaudio
  • Backlit Steelseries Keyboard
  • 7.1 Audio Output with THX TruStudio Pro
  • 802.11b/g/n Wireless
  • 7-in-1 Card Reader
  • 720p HD Webcam
  • USB 2.0 / 3.0 – 2 / 3
  •  ESATA / SPDIF – Yes / Yes
  • HDMI & VGA Outputs
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • 9 Cell Battery
  • 2 Year Collect and Return Warranty

Personally this is worth the money just for the 3gig Nvidia Graphics card and the Blue ray burner, (Macbook pro doesn’t feature either and this computer would out perform it in every sector).

The 17.3″ Vortex III

Here’s one not built for looks, but if you’re a serious editor then let’s be honest, as long as it get the job done who CARES!. This custom build can be changed to your liking and has a base price of £900!, it’s another one that’s going to take your money further. Here’s its base specs for £900 (less that half the price of the Macbook!!)

LINK (CUSTOM SPECS)

Oh yeah, I forgot this is a post on the new Macbook pro retina display, hhhmmmm, Starting to look a little less appealing now? Oh, I almost forgot, nobody will think im cool with a PC, especially a custom-built un branded one.

Here’s one for those who would rather have piece of mind dealing with a Pro consumer company (and conforming to the whole ‘Brand’ Idea):

SONY VAIO Z Series:

The flag-ship Laptop of Sony’s enterprise. Its impressive and the base unit is again much cheaper than the Macbook Pro (Starting from £1000). I like these Laptops they have similar build quality to Apple so you know you’re getting a really sturdy piece of machine if you’re one of those adventure types. Again you can configure this to your own liking, personally I would recommend upgrading to the i7 processor (free upgrade till the 18th!!) and getting that battery sheet to extend you battery life to 14hours!!.  Here’s its base specs:

  • Upto Intel® Core™ i7 processor
  • Genuine Windows® 7 Ultimate or other editions
  • 33.2cm (13.1″) display up to VAIO Display Premium (1920×1080)
  • Up to 512 GB SSD Flash drive (3rd Generation)
  • Up to 8 GB memory

Customise it again to the £1600 price bracket  and here’s what you can get:

  • Intel®Core(TM)i7-3612QM,2.1GHz
  • Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium
  • 256 GB SATA Gen3 Flash SSD
  • 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3-SDRAM
  • No Power Media Dock
  • 33.2 cm LCD, 1920×1080 Premium
  • No Wireless WAN
  • Longe-Life battery
  • Standard keyboard
  • Office 2010 Starter + Acrobat
  • Internet Security – 1 year
  • McAfee Online Backup trial

So, there’s some nice alternative for you if you don’t want to buy into Apple Slavery, products. Just remember, when buying a Laptop or PC you need a Good display (full HD 1080 by 1920), a Good CPU (the Intel i7 quad-core), a Good GPU (Nvidia are leading the market ATM so I would go for them, 2gig plus if possible), a nice fast SSD with lots of space and of course a good motherboard with USB3. Try looking around in your price range on custom sites, you’ll often find PC world and others look like their selling you a good deal but there not, they will skimp out on one of the above components, seriously crippling the machine. Hope this has been some use to you all.
